Frequently Asked Questions

Tips for eCourse Completion

  1. Make sure you are using a supported web browser and operating system
    • Use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox
    • Internet Explorer v.11 users will need to add https://uc.sumtotal.host as a trusted site under Tools>Internet Options>Security>Trusted Sites>Sites
    • If you are using Internet Explorer v.11 or Edge, check for and remove compatibility view settings for sumtotalsystems.com

  2. Ensure you have either DISABLED pop-up blockers or created an exception so that your browser will allow pop-ups from https://uc.sumtotal.host. (EdgeChromeFirefoxIESafari)

  3. Enable Cookies: Each user must have their browser set to enable cookies. You can view this setting in the browser’s security dialog box. Note, some privacy add-ons block cookies.

  4. Clear your browser's cookies before starting a new eCourse by clearing the history or cache

  5. Verify Adobe Flash Player is up to date and enabled. If your browser includes an option to list specific or trusted sites for which Flash is allowed, you might add https://uc.sumtotal.host to the list.
Note: If your browser settings for Flash are set to always ask before running, you must then click to play or allow Flash to run in the course by clicking an icon or notice in the browser window. This icon is usually next to the URL field. Certain browsers, regardless of general Flash settings, will always require you to provide explicit permission for Flash to run. Look for an icon to the left or right of the URL field at the top of the browser window.

  6. Verify thaJavaScript is enabled in your web browser. (IEChromeSafari)

  7. Do not leave eCourses paused for extended periods of time. If you need to step away, exit the course until you can return. Leaving a course paused for too long may prevent it from reporting progress back to the system server.

  8. Exit a course using the Exit link from the course menu when available. If needed, wait for the course to indicate it is okay to close the browser window before doing so. Closing the window too soon may prevent the course from reporting progress back to the system server.

  9. Save a screenshot of your quiz results and/or completion confirmation screen.

  10. Plug-Ins, Extensions, or Toolbars: If you have installed any add-ons, plug-ins, or toolbars in your browser, especially those designed to protect privacy, these may interfere with the system's ability to record your progress and/or eCourse functionality. You may want to disable them while attempting to complete online courses or use a browser without such.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is my online course not launching?

For online activities to launch, pop-up blockers must be disabled and your browser must be updated.

  • What browsers are supported?

In general, the UC Learning Center supports the current version and the two previous versions of the browsers listed below on systems (desktops, laptops, or tablets) running the following as listed below.

    Supported Operating Systems
    Microsoft Windows 10, 8.1, 8, and 7 SP1
Apple macOS 10.10, 10.11, 10.12, and 10.13 (older versions are not supported)
    Supported Browsers
    Internet Explorer v111
    Edge 42.x1
    Firefox (v61)
    Chrome (v67)
    Safari (10.x & 11.x)

1The LMS does not support Internet Explorer or Edge in Compatibility Mode. Internet Explorer users will need to add https://uc.sumtotal.host as a trusted site under Tools>Internet Options>Security>Trusted Sites>Sites.

  • Can I use my phone or mobile device to take a course?

Mobile support refers to the SumTotal App only. Mobile web browsers are not supported.

    • iPhone or iPad (iOS 10.x & 11.x, 64-bit only on 11)
    • Android phones or tablets (6.x, 7.x, 8.x)
    • Microsoft Surface Pro devices

NOTE: Currently there are limited eCourses available via the mobile app, which has limited functionality. You cannot register to in-person courses via the app. We recommend using a desktop, laptop, or tablet running Windows 10 to access the UC Learning Center.

  • What are additional requirements I should check?

    Additional Requirements

Additional requirements in all browsers include:

    • Pop-Ups allowed
    • JavaScript enabled
    • Adobe Flash Player installed/updated and enabled
    • Cookies enabled
  • When I launch an eCourse, the screen is blank or missing information?

This issue is most likely due to Flash being disabled in your web browser settings and/or not updated to the most current version. Even if you have enabled Flash in the past, new browser updates may disable it.

If your browser settings for Flash are set to always ask before running, you must still click to play or allow Flash to run in the course by clicking an icon or notice in the browser window. This icon is usually next to the URL field. Certain browsers, regardless of general Flash settings, will always require you to provide explicit permission for Flash to run. Again look for an icon to the left or right of the URL field at the top of the browser window.

You may need to search your web browser's support site to troubleshoot why your particular browser is not correctly displaying an eCourse . For example Firefox has an entire support page of issues around why "Videos, sound, pictures and animations don't work".

  • I am a MAC/Safari user. Why is the audio not working in this eCourse?

A recent change in Safari auto-play functionality may impact how audio functions in some eCourses. Depending upon the version of Safari and the user's browser settings, affected users may find that while the course auto-plays upon launch, no audio can be heard.

Quick fix: If the users toggles the audio button in the playbar off/on then sound will play normally for the remainder of the course.

    Recommended browser settings:

    1. Log into the UC Learning Center using Safari.
    2. Select Safari > Settings for This Website...
    3. Select Auto-Play: Allow All Auto-Play for the site (uc.sumtotal.host)
