Makerspaces

What are makerspaces?

Makerspaces are spaces at the university that promote innovation and creativity in constructing many varied products.  Makerspaces are becoming more common, with the advent and greater use of 3D printing (known also as additive manufacturing) and laser cutters, along with the more traditional tools such as soldering and machining.

Learners at all skill levels can visit the makerspace to:
   - explore new technologies
   - attend workshops and receive guidance on designs and tools,
   - prototype ideas,
   - build problem-solving skills,
   - apply technology to coursework and research,
   - and have fun, build community, and be creative

Hazards

Shop and makerspace safety is a critical part of an accident prevention program. Employees, students and visitors may be exposed to hazardous machinery, physical hazards, hazardous materials or procedures that could result in injury.

Shops are rooms or areas where fabrication and repair activities occur, using tools and machinery that present physical hazards to occupants. Shops at the University include a broad range of uses that support teaching, research, and facility maintenance and repair. In many ways, makerspaces are like other workshops; they vary widely in their purpose and the types of equipment they have on hand. Similarly, the potential hazards reflect the equipment as well as the activities in the space.

Controls

Employees, students and other shop users need to:

  • Take designated shop training classes and refreshers according to your location.
  • Observe all safety precautions and remind others as needed.
  • Read, understand, sign, and follow your site-specific Shop PPE Assessment.
  • Follow SOPs for equipment, activities and chemical/material use.
  • Report potential new hazards to the shop safety coordinator.
  • Report injuries and near-misses.
