This training series will feature timely, challenging  topics lead by subject matter experts, presented online in workshop format with opportunities to discuss scenarios, practice skills, and plan for your specific field projects and settings.

This event is sponsored by UCOP Risk Services, UCLA BSAS GAEL, the UC Field Research Safety Center of Excellence, and the UC Field Safety Workgroup. The content builds on the 2022 UC Fieldwork Leadership Retreat and webinars hosted in 2020 and 2021.  Content is compiled and accessible to all via the UC Field Safety Leadership Training Library.

Speaker Biography
curt davidson
Dr. Curt Davidson

Curt Davidson, Ph.D., is the President of Alpenglow Education and an assistant professor at the University of Wyoming. His research involves investigations of outdoor recreation, mental health, and recreation conflict, to name a few. He is the author of several peer-reviewed publications and two textbooks. He is also the creator of the Behavioral First Responder, a mental health certification training program for outdoor professionals. Curt has previously worked as a consultant, an assistant professor at California State University, Long Beach, and as an outdoor instructor and guide for a variety of programs around the world. While not teaching and writing, you can find him climbing or skiing or hanging out with his puppy Winnie.

Dr. Breezy Jackson

Dr. Breezy Jackson is Director of Yosemite and Sequoia Field Stations for UC Merced. She has also worked as a wildlife biologist for Yosemite National Park, a wildland fire fighter and fire lookout on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Washington state, and as an equipment operator and field coordinator for the United States Antarctic Program. She's driven a menagerie of off-road vehicles including the 20-ton "Ivan" the Terra Bus featured in the Werner Hertzog film Encounters at the Edge of the World.

Nicole Snell

Nicole Snell is an award winning international speaker, facilitator, and self-defense expert specializing in gender-based violence prevention, boundary setting, and empowerment. She is the CEO of Girls Fight Back (a Black woman owned business), Founder of Outdoor Defense and Lead Instructor with both IMPACT Personal Safety and IMPACT Global. Nicole speaks to gender inclusive groups from industries around the world and has facilitated sexual assault prevention trainings at over 90 military installations internationally. Nicole is a credentialed Empowerment Self-Defense Professional and an NACP Credentialed Victim Advocate. She is committed to ending violence in all of its forms while empowering people with the skills to live confidently, safely, and freely. 

Nicole is passionate about sharing her love for self-defense education to help open up people’s access to the outdoors and beyond. She's an experienced solo hiker, solo traveler, and outdoors enthusiast who has dedicated much of her life to helping others adventure with confidence and live their lives limitlessly. Nicole has visited 34 countries, hiked in 18 of them and summited Mt. Whitney in 2022. She's also an adventure leader for the Los Angeles non-profit, Black Girls Trekkin'. She has been featured on Spectrum 1 News for her work with outdoor safety and self-defense, and has been interviewed for Women’s Health Magazine, Backpacker Magazine, Runner’s World, and Outside Magazine. Nicole believes that when we are empowered to live our lives freely and confidently, there is no limit to what we can do!

Steven DeVanzo

Steven DeVanzo, originally hailing from New York, has found himself in Bishop, CA by following his interest in science and art. He is currently the Operations Manager with White Mountain Research Center which he has been with for over 10 years. Steven has spent countless hours off road, in different vehicles and machines, navigating various and complicated road and weather conditions.
